Turbulent Thinking Thwarted

Apple Employee Fired For Thinking Different

CUPERTINO, CA—

Brent Barlow, 27, a software analyst and beta-tester at Apple Computer headquarters in Cupertino, was fired Monday for “thinking a little too different.”

Apple spokespersons said the firing was necessary because Barlow “consistently failed to adhere to the normal standards of conduct and daily routines expected of employees of Apple Computer.”

Among the floutings of convention cited in Barlow’s Apple employee file: developing a pulley system to store his mountain bike above his workstation, listening to Bob Dylan on his headphones while testing software, and taking barefoot walks around the Apple campus to “feel more connected to the creative energy of others.”

“It’s okay to think outside the box,” said Avie Tevanian, Apple senior vice-president of software engineering. “In fact, we very much encourage that sort of thing here at Apple. But in Mr. Barlow’s case, he went just a bit too far.”

Barlow was first written up in September 1996, when he was cited for “unprofessional and inappropriate personal modifications to his workspace.” In addition to taped-up pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein and R. Buckminster Fuller, Barlow painted a large red question mark on the side of his monitor, scanned and displayed a non-approved desktop screen image of Jim Henson, and replaced his computer’s trademarked Apple system beep with a snippet of the John Lennon song “Imagine.”

“I like to explore problems from unusual angles,” said the ponytailed Barlow, cleaning out the desk he has occupied since joining Apple in 1995. “And being in a free-form environment of my own creation really helps me get in the right frame of mind.”

Barlow’s most recent formal write-up came last Thursday, when his team supervisor caught him doing a headstand.

“I was stuck on this bug I discovered in the new Mac OS X system software that Apple’s developing. No matter what I tried, nothing worked,” Barlow said. “So I thought to myself, what I need to do is turn my whole approach to this problem upside-down. And what better way to do that than by standing on your head?”

In an effort to prevent such incidents of “excessive iconoclasm” in the future, Apple has developed a manual outlining the company’s rules and regulations regarding individualism. Permitted will be such unorthodox activities as removing shoes when seated or within four feet of a desk; whistling when given prior written permission from a direct supervisor; and kicking puddles, provided the kicking is conducted during one’s lunch hour and the puddle is one of the 35 on the Apple campus specifically designated for such a purpose. Prohibited will be such “gratuitously idiosyncratic” behaviors as singing out loud, flying kites and catching butterflies.

“Of course, we want our employees to be individuals and ‘do their own thing,’ so to speak,” Apple director of corporate communications Michael Landau said. “But Mr. Barlow’s behavior consistently crossed the line. If he wants to think that different, he can do it on his own time.”

Hmmm…

A man got fired for thinking,

Not for on the job drinking,

Or chauvinistic winking,

His heart is certainly sinking.

His thinking wasn’t the same,

He had only himself to blame,

He wasn’t too good at their game,

His firing is quite a shame.

He had his own frame of mind,

While working the daily grind,

Uniqueness is what he refined,

He is surely one of a kind.

He did things all on his own,

He wasn’t an Apple Corp. clone,

He’d stand on his head all alone,

Causing his bosses to groan.

His thinking just didn’t fit in,

Like hanging his two wheeled Schwinn,

Above his desk; oh what a sin,

Wearing his bosses’ nerves thin.

Though Barlow had lots of grit,

To them he was just a misfit,

It’s something he might admit,

But now he is going to split.

Password Protection Produces Potential Problems

This came from ABC News.com found at: http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/anyone-can-bypass-your-iphones-passcode-some-practice-required-1C8377251

It may take practice, as well as some really great timing, but anyone with the knowledge, and a little practice can bypass your iPhone’s pass code to make calls.

They can also send out emails and messages, scroll through your call history, view (and edit) your contact information.

This (hacking) was done with an  iPhone 5 as well as an iPhone 4.

Both devices were running iOS 6.1, with  the very latest update. That update seems to be at the center of the vulnerability.

An Apple spokesperson said they were aware of the problem and would find a fix as soon as possible.

You can read more on the link above.

Hmmm….

You iPhone is vulnerable now,

Anyone can show you how,

To bypass your secret code,

And find the mother load,

Of contacts and calls that were made,

Even with Apple’s upgrade.

They’re working to find a fast fix,

To overcome the hackers new tricks.

Let’s hope they find one fast,

Before someone discovers your past.

Airbag Assaults Airhead Attempting Apple Acquisition

A while back, a dumb, California guy crashed his vehicle into the storefront of a closed Apple retail store.

He was subsequently arrested by police.

Someone should have told him that having an apple a day doesn’t mean stealing them.

I wonder if the idiot had Collision Insurance on his car.

I can see another headline…”Apple Aggressor Apprehended”.

Hmmm…

A guy smashed through a closed storefront.

It wasn’t one of those movie stunts.

He was after some gear,

Without any fear.

It turned out to be an unfruitful hunt.

Hackers Hit Honey Holes

According to  The Associated Press (AP), many Apple Mac users were surprised recently when their computers stopped running programs which were written using Java’s programming.

Apple blocked Java on some units because Java has been having many security problems.

In fact, last month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) came out with a recommendation to disable Java in all computers in the U.S. because of hacking issues.

Oracle Corporation, the owner of Java has tried in vain to block hackers. It has been alerting users to obtain new downloads of the program to fix the holes that hackers readily use.

In spite of Oracle’s efforts, the DHS still believes there are more problems with Java’s coding. They recommend disabling the program in Web Browsers.

The DHS recommends disabling Java in Web browsers to avoid potential hacking attacks. Oracle Corp., which owns Java, has issued updates that fix known vulnerabilities, but the DHS expects that there are more flaws in Java’s coding.

BTW…I heard there is another Java update available right now. Check it out at the Oracle web site, www.oracle.com

Does all this hack you off?

Hmmm

Apple is dumping old Java;

It’s something they don’t want us to have-a.

It’s security is weak,

In spite of some tweaks,

Java users are hotter than lava.

Paper Penetrated by Plucky Poachers

According to The Wall Street Journal the same group of hackers that penetrated the New York Times also cracked into their private accounts as well.

The Journal reported that the hackers were looking for news stories involving China.

The attack was generated via computers in Beijing.

Of course, Chinese government officials have denied any cyber attacks of American businesses.

Hmmm…

The Chinese hacked into the Journal,

The owners thought it was infernal,

They’re hitting the papers,

And other news makers,

They want to find every news kernel

Google’s Glass left Apple aghast

After Google’s successful demonstration of its video-capturing, augmented reality glasses, Apple quickly applied for, (and received), a patent for its own magic glasses for a wearable computer display.

This could be trouble for me. Half the time, I can’t find my regular glasses.

I can see it now:

Me…”Honey have you seen my glasses?”

She…Which ones? Your long distance glasses, your reading glasses, your sun glasses or those new, weird looking ones?”

Me…”The new ones. The computer display glasses that cost me three hundred and fifty dollars.”

She…”Did you get the extended warranty on the computer thingy’s?”

Me…”No. Why?”

She…”Just wondered.”

Me…”I can’t find them. Did you see them?”

She…”Yes. The dog is chewing on them in the den.”

Hmmm…

Soon we’ll all wear a display,

We’ll use it for work or for play;

Some glass in a frame,

For use in a game,

I’m waiting for that special day.

Can Apple now be called Crapple?

There’s trouble in Apple’s App City.

Apple’s iOS apps are becoming unstable and/or crashing. It happens after updates, or downloads. It affects games like Angry Birds Space and Instapaper.

The app developers are blaming Apple.

What’s the big deal? There’s always at least one bad app-le in every basket.

Hmmm

Apple’s apps are now gone a crashing,

Now people are into Apple bashing;

They’re red in the face,

Like those Birds out in Space,

And the competition can’t keep from laughing.

Are they Siri-ous?

IBM, also known as Big Blue, will not let its employees talk to Apple’s “Siri” application on their 4S IPhones while at work.

The company is concerned about voice commands which are given to Siri. They think the commands may be  saved in the Siri/Apple system. IBM thinks their employees will unwittingly divulge IBM corporate secrets to Apple.

I think IBM should take a bite out of Apple, like Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden. (I know, it was a different kind of apple. Just go with this.)

Wait a minute. If IBM took a bite out of Apple, Big Blue would be thrown out of Computer Heaven. Then they would have to spend the rest of their days facing problems, law suits, falling stock prices, and lost profits.

But those things have already happened to Big Blue. Is there something else we don’t know about IBM?

Hmmm.

Now people at work can’t use Siri,

It’s making the workers quite weary,

They work for Big Blue,

They’ve always been true,

But their bosses are making them teary.
