Touchy Twitter Trial

NYPD Twitter Campaign Turns Ugly

A New York Police Department campaign to engage people on Twitter via the #myNYPD hashtag backfired in a big way.

The New York Police Department learned a hard lesson this week — be careful what you ask for. Especially when dealing with a public forum like Twitter.

The trouble started at around 2 p.m. ET Tuesday, when the department took to its official Twitter account to launch a little contest intended to engage the public on social media. “Do you have a photo w/ a member of the NYPD? Tweet us & tag it #myNYPD. It may be featured on our Facebook,” the department tweeted.

They were probably expecting a few good-natured snaps showcasing New York’s Finest in action. But things didn’t exactly go as planned.

It started out innocent enough, of course. Some users posted nice photos of themselves with officers.

But when the #myNYPD hashtag went viral, thousands of others took it as an opportunity to expose police aggression by sharing embarrassing and unflattering photos of New York City officers fighting with members of the public.

One heavily retweeted photo posted by an Occupy Wall Street supporter shows a police officer pointing his gun at a dog a homeless man lies on the ground having a seizure. Others show police officers holding people to the ground, pulling hair, punching, and sleeping on the subway.

The embarrassment comes as the NYPD works to ramp up its efforts on Twitter. Just last week, five officers were given the go-ahead to begin tweeting news about their precincts.

NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis told The New York Times that the snafu would not deter the department from engaging with citizens through social media in the future.

“You take the good with the bad,” he said.

Hmmm…

NYP wanted some Tweets,
From homes and from the streets,
They stood for pics on their beats,
But they suffered some defeats.

People Tweeted police being rude,
Cops with bad attitudes,
One was seen punching a dude,
Showing behavior that’s crude.

Others showed cops at their best,
Taking photos at their request,
Showing badges on their proud chests,
Smiling and talking in jests.

Cops are not basically mean,
Or totally cruel and obscene,
When they arrive on the scene,
If you know what I mean.

They’re there to protect each one,
When threatened by a knife or a gun,
From bad guys they will not run,
They work ’till their job is done.

So when you see a cop,
Outside a store or shop,
It will not hurt to stop,
They might be a mom or pop.

They’re people just like you,
With a hard job to do,
Dressed in NYPD blues,
They’re heroes through and through!

God bless them one and all,
When they are on a call,
Not one of them should fall,
While they stand proud and tall.

Terrible Tweeting Tactic Tried

Tweeter

A Los Angeles man was arrested for allegedly offering to shoot someone for 100 retweets.

March. 14 (UPI) –

A Los Angeles man who allegedly offered to shoot someone in exchange for 100 re-tweets and then post the results on Twitter, was arrested when police were able to trace the account back to his home.

Dakkari Dijon McAnuff was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of making criminal threats.

A tweet from the @StillDMC account, which has since been taken down, showed a picture of a rifle pointed down at a street accompanied by a caption reading, “100 [retweets] and I’ll shoot someone walking.”

When police arrived at the 20-year-old’s home, they discovered an air rifle.

He was being held on $50,000 bail and either posted it, or got access to the Internet in jail.

Hmmm…

Man threatens others for re-tweets,
Cops got him later on their beat;
He wasn’t so nice,
Please take my advice,
It’s something he should never repeat.

Why shoot someone for recognition?
That’s really a psycho condition;
Be kind toward all folks,
Just smile; tell some jokes,
Engage in a little cognition.

He was caught for making some threats,
Would he do it is anyone’s bet;
He was holding a rifle,
And that is no trifle,
Now the guy is under arrest.

GRUMPY GETS GLORIOUS GIG!

ST. LOUIS (AP) — It probably won’t affect her famous mood, but Grumpy Cat now has an endorsement deal.

The frown-faced Internet sensation, real name Tardar Sauce, is now the “spokescat” for a Friskies brand of cat food, Nestle Purina PetCare announced Tuesday. The St. Louis-based company didn’t release terms of the deal.

Photos of Grumpy Cat, her brown and white face in a constant scowl, have become a constant presence on Facebook and other social media, often accompanied by crabby messages such as “I don’t like days that end in Y” or “I’m listening, I just don’t care. She also is among the biggest stars of the peculiar trend of cat dominance on Web videos and postings.

Grumpy Cat’s own Facebook page has more than 1.3 million likes. The dour animal also has more than 111,000 Twitter followers.

In addition to the relationship with Nestle Purina, which featured Grumpy Cat in an online video game series in March, the 1 ½-year-old mixed-breed feline has a merchandise line and reportedly has a movie deal in the works.

“She’s very busy,” Friskies spokeswoman Julie Catron said. “The first thing she’ll do for us is receive the lifetime achievement award.”

Catron isn’t kidding. The feline will receive the award Oct. 15 in New York as Friskies honors the best cat videos of the year as chosen through an online vote.

Grumpy Cat is owned by Tabatha Bundesen, who lives in Phoenix.

Hmmm…

Grumpy will get an award,

Gosh, I’m really quite floored;

A cat with a “tude”,

Who looks really rude,

She also appears to be bored.

Her face has a constant scowl,

Like her life has run afoul;

She makes up great quotes,

So you should take notes,

The humor will make you howl.

The cat’s a star on Facebook,

Because of her serious look,

She’s big on the “Twitter”,

Though her face looks bitter,

Her fans are really quite hooked.

Now the cat has got a big deal,

That’s what Purina revealed;

She might get a movie,

Hey that would be groovy,

Who knew that she’d have such appeal?

Dates Data Determine Desirability

In a recent survey, (I lost the site reference, sorry.) it was determined that about 50 percent of women and 38 percent of men use Facebook to research their dates before meeting with them.

Additionally, 50 percent of women and 30 percent of men say they’d definitely cancel a scheduled date with someone if they found something they didn’t like about the person.

The survey also found that almost 50 percent of men don’t appreciate women checking on them prior to dating.

Gee. I wonder why the men oppose it.

What could they be hiding?

What have men posted that could be embarrassing?

I also wonder if women or men Google their scheduled dates?

Do you think women giggle when they Google men?

Do men titter when they Twitter women?

Hmmm…

Some daters are checking the net,

To see in advance what they’d get.

They check Facebook status,

They get it free, gratis.

To insure the date won’t bring regrets.

Tweets From Surgical Suites

Three surgeons in Detroit rotated between working on a patient’s brain while watching a computer screen. They typed answers to tweeted questions which were sent in by medical students.

In another town, joint surgery was performed on a patient while a live-tweet session was in progress.

Overall, there have been a number of surgeries performed in the USA using Twitter in the background.

It’s becoming a useful educational aid in the medical field.

Hmmm…

They’re now tweeting live operations.

It’s the latest surgical sensation.

They’ll cut through a bone,

While using the phone,

You can see it while you’re on vacation.

Medical Media Malpractice

Doctors and Medical Students are being told they shouldn’t use Facebook or other social media sites.

Security experts believe they could unwittingly break the doctor-patient confidentiality if they discuss patients’ medical problems.

Personally I don’t want my colonoscopy photos on Facebook.

That would be the end of me.

Hmmm…

Med people cannot go a tweeting,

Or Facebook to post a new greeting;

They can’t break their trust,

That’s really a must,

Even if a patient is bleeding.
